To understand the Vedas is to to know true wisdom. Vedanga provides the knowledge and tools for truly understanding the sacred texts. The 6 Auxiliary disciplines of the Vedangas are considered to be a pre-requisite to understanding the vedas. Even if one does not master vedanga in this life time, one should still pursue the study of these divine revelations. Familiarizing yourself with the basic principals of each discipline will assist during vedic study.
The six disciplines are Shiksha (phonetics),, Chandas (meter), Vyakarana (grammar), Nirukta (etymology), Jyotisha (astronomy) and Kalpa (ritual).

Vedangas of Language - These four disciplines focus on truly understanding of the language of sacred texts through Etymology, Grammar, Phonetic, and Meter. Study this link as it is just a basic overview of these teachings.

The following Mantra, from the Sashakthi Shiva Navakam, should be chanted prior to engaging in an understanding of vedanga. It doesn't have to be done but it has greatly help me gain clarity of the mind when studying.

In all the aspects of analysis of knowledge, Especially in the science of phonetics, Grant me expertise, Oh Shiva, “Iym” salutations, “Kleem”.

Devotion to Lord Shiva as Kala Bhairava will allow one to utilize their time with absolute mastery and never waste a single moment. The Kalabhairavashtakam may be experienced as a gateway into the power of kala Bhairava.
The amount of knowledge sorrounding the pursuit of divine consciousness is overwhelming. However this is exactly why we pursue the tools of Vedanga. Take the first step, feel the passion and embrace the divine. We are so fortunate simply because the wisdom is available to those who seek it.
