"What Has Been Heard"

Sruti is the classification of sacred scriptures that have no authorship but that are of a divine origin. The literature we have was initially translated into something understandable by humans after the Rishis experienced the revelation of the Cosmic Sound of truth.
In matters of faith and practice, Sruti is considered to be the ultimate authority.

Sruti are texts that are not of human origin, possessing no authorship and traditionally transmitted orally by those of the Brahman caste, * Rig-Veda (hymns recited by the hotar) * Yajur-Veda (hymns recited by the adhvaryu) * Sama-Veda (hymns recited by the udgatr) * Atharva-Veda (a collection of ancient spells and charms)
